I've touched on this topic a few times in Facebook and Twitter posts, but the best training program is the one that you will actually do consistently. This presents challenges to someone who is looking to enjoy their workouts and for personal trainers who want to keep their clients long term.
As someone who works out, you can have the worlds most scientifically optimal program written specifically for your goals but if you hate it and never do it, what good is it? Consistency in fitness, and in life, is everything. Even if your program isn't the most "optimal" program ever written, if you stick with it, you will see results. Some training methods produce quicker results than others so it is a fine line you have to walk to keep the workouts fun but also effective.
The challenge of my job as a personal trainer is to design a highly effective but yet enjoyable program for each of my clients. All of my clients have similar goals (weight loss or muscle gain) but they have very different programs. Why is that? Everyone is different.
One client may love a certain exercise while the other hates it. I have to make the program enjoyable so that the client enjoys it enough to continue. If they quit, they will be disappointed because they didn't reach their goals and I would quickly run out of clients.
Too much enjoyment can be a bad thing too.....
At the end of the day it comes down to results. Your client may love your exercises and have a ton of fun during their session but, if that needle on the scale isn't moving then they're unlikely to keeping paying hundreds of dollars a month to train with you.
Mix in exercises that your client enjoys along with some that they maybe don't like as much but are more effective for whatever their goal may be. This keeps the workout challenging, fun, and most importantly effective.
