It’s officially that time of year that people ambitiously join the gym and claim that this is the year that they will finally get in shape. Unfortunately, a large majority of these people will give up on their fitness journey before the end of February. Here are my three big tips to not fall victim to January Gym Disease in 2017!
Tip 1: Sign a One-Year Contract
Join a gym that requires you to sign a one-year contract that has a penalty for canceling early. Signing up for the year long contract will force you to commit for the full year (unless you want to pay a monthly bill for a gym that you’re not even using.) The cancelation penalty will ensure that you don’t cancel before the full year is up.
Tip 2: Set a Goal that can be tracked
Everyone in the world always talks about goal setting and while that is good, the goal has to be one that can be tracked. Saying I want to “lose weight” or “tone up” is not a goal you can track. How much weight do you want to lose? What is “toned”? A good goal has a definitive start and end point. Set a goal with a specific number or date that you can use to measure progress. Also don’t get discouraged if you don’t perfectly hit your goal by your deadline. Progress is what matters, not perfection. As long as you are progressing, that’s all that matters.
Tip 3: Hire a Personal Trainer
I am not saying to do this because I am trainer. You don’t have to hire me, you can hire whatever trainer you’d like. However, I do think that it is smart to hire a trainer when you are first getting started. A good trainer will teach you proper form to help you avoid injuries and hopefully get you results fairly quickly. It will also keep you accountable. You’ll have appointments set up that you have to be at. When you’re first getting started it’s important to make working out a habit and this is a great way to do so. Another benefit to getting a trainer around the New Year is that many of them will be offering deals and specials to “ramp up” their business. Although this may not be wise on their end (will cover why in a later post), it’s certainly something that you can take advantage of!
