Ahhh push-ups, who doesn't love dropping down and knocking out a few reps every once and awhile? I sure do.
As much as I enjoy them, for whatever reason if you ask people what their typical push or chest day looks like they rarely will include push-ups.
Why is that?
Perhaps it is because push-ups are a bodyweight exercise and once you've built up some strength it can become very easy to do twenty, or more, reps in a row. Once you get over that twenty rep mark the exercise becomes fairly redundant and you'll likely seek out a more challenging alternative.
Below are my favorite variations of the push-up that I use with my clients and athletes to increase the intensity and benefit of the traditional push-up. Not only will these increase the intensity, but they're also great for vacation and at home workouts where maybe the weightlifting equipment is limited.
1) Sliding Push-Ups w/ Towel
2) Decline Push-Ups on Stability Ball
3) TRX Push-Ups
4) Medball Push-Ups
5) Plyo Push-Ups
